Our History

The Junior Welfare Association began in August 1938, when eleven women, inspired by a luncheon speaker on the social conditions of Decatur, came together with a shared purpose: to improve the economic, educational, and social well-being of their community through volunteer service and financial assistance.

That very month, JWA launched its first fundraising effort—a community fashion show—and hosted its first service project: a picnic for children from a local orphanage. The spirit of service quickly spread, and by 1942, the organization had grown to seventy members, who collectively contributed more than 8,000 volunteer hours.

Over the decades, JWA’s impact has continued to grow. Today, we are proud to include 30 active members and over 250 Patroness Members, with our reach extending across Decatur and all of Macon County.

Nearly 86 years later, JWA remains deeply committed to the vision of its founding women: supporting children and families in need and investing in the future of our community through enduring service and generosity.
